And your new Miss Beauty UK England is....

(National Wear)

I've always seen Miss Beauty UK and because the Miss age was up to 28 I didn't want to enter as I feel more comfortable competing in the Ms Category which I have done this past year. But there was an offer on sponsorship, I had pageant withdrawals from YEMI and I needed stage practice if I was ever going to be up with the likes of the other galaxy girls in my cat. So I entered on the last week before the final, which means I had less than 5 days to prepare 4 outfits and get my butt into gear! I had some parts already but I jazzed up a few items, lots of eco recycling and bam! outfits done!

(One of my awards!)

It was great because I saw so many old pageant friends and got to compete with my sister queen from Disney Fiona (spoiler alert she won the whole thing!!) as well as my curvy sister Vanessa and of course catch up with the pageant mamas! There were four round, national outfit (another spoiler alert I won best National Wear), Eco, Fashion and of course evening wear. In eco  wore the famous Disney Dress which everyone loves and I can really swish it!! In fashion I changed up a sherri hill evening gown into a high low made for my big butt and evening I had an old evening gown that I had bought in an auction. I was so amazed to win Style Queen out of the whole pageant which really meant alot as I had made all my outfits myself in the 5 days I had to prepare!

(Best Interview!!!)

I also won best in interview which as you can see by my face I was so happy as that's one skill I pass to my pageant trainees so would be embarrassing if I couldn't walk the walk or talk the talks as it should be. Then it came down to the final two for Miss which was me and Fiona, I knew she had won and when my name was called for Runner Up I was so happy we had a good 30 second hug on stage! She had prepared months for the finals and wouldn't be right me taking the crown after 5 days, it just shows all the prep with your appearances and charity work do make the difference to the scores!!!

(Being Crowned)

So after all the crowning I took my heels off because all day in heels is not good for my hips, then they started awarding the country holders. So these were the people who had placed the highest for their country but not winning their division title. When my name was called as the England Winner I was shocked and had to be crowned with no heels!!! It was a comedy moment but I was so proud to be the highest placed England girl!!!

(With the Country Titleholders)

But that's not just the best bit, we also get to go to AMERICA!!!!! We get discounted entry into an American pageant, so subject to finding a sponsor I may be travelling with my fellow sister queens! It was an amazing end to such a great day!! So now that I have won, I get to carry on my Beauty UK journey and also get to compete again next year to win the UK spot!!! My first appearances was donating to the Threshold Homeless Charity here in Swindon. I did an appeal at my workplace and managed to get ten big bags full of different items for the homeless and got to chat about the work. It was soo good to hear how many places it would benefit and I will be continuing my fundraising for them In the new year.

(All the goodies)

I have many exciting things and appearances planned in the new year, fingers crossed I get to go to America! Have a great xmas and a very happy new year, from your first and new Miss Beauty UK England 2016/17

Crayons and Mermaid Hair, the final hours....

(Pageant besties)

There is less than 48 hours until the final, until we are twerking on stage, sorry I mean walking on stage and one lucky girl will grab that title of Ms Catwalk Perfect UK. I am a headless zombie right now trying to fit work and preparing, finishing my outfits and packing up the pot noodles to where I may get on the wrong train and end up somewhere in Scotland.

I even managed to squeeze in some last minute appearances before the sash gets packed away with the rest of the pageant sparkles and food items for the food bank! I attended the Goldsworthy Hair Shop launch with my fellow pageant queen Georgia, Mrs Galaxy Wiltshire 2016 where we got to be papped by the papers, meet and have selfies with BNTM runner up Angel as well as some hair goodies to take away with us! It was great to visit the salon who we have worked with in the past with the Miss Wiltshire finals, where a lot has changed In the last two years!

(In the Salon)

I also managed to grab a few pieces for the food banks, which is a great idea for those who struggle to afford food, can come to these food banks and come away with a package to help them through the tough times. Also, working in a gym has it's benefits, as we get lots of samples so I managed to score a whole box full of shower gel and shampoo which I am donating to the Threshold Homeless charity, with the homeless drive being planned for November :)

(Homeless goodies, tired face pending to be taken away!)

As well as packing all that stuff off, I got round to making my fellow contestants a little gift and something personal, and because I don't watch TV so I like doing creative things! I've also made a special something for our lovely director but I wont spoil the surprise ;)

(Pageant princesses!!)

So I'm now back off to teach my clients, and spin a hula hoop around me for an hour and maybe get a couple hours sleep. I am so excited to be competing again, it's come around so quick and what I love is this pageant is full of diversity! It's going to be a day to remember!!!

Lots of love

Catwalk Countdown!!

(Bank Holiday Sash Pic!)

The countdown is on, the hotel and train have been booked and I am trying to salvage my wow wear into something presentable, it is of course the countdown to the Catwalk Perfect finals!! The Ms category has the most competition but I am loving how diverse we all are and my curvy sisters! The judges are going to have a hard time picking (but not a hard time hearing us!)! I've been super busy with work this month so trying to jam pack everything into my sequinned world but I have got a few things done, apart from just changing my hair colour once again!

First off, as well as pageant training Jade for the FOTG England finals (update she won top 3 and won her place, totally claiming that as a win for my training but also style outfits as both her dresses I sold her!!) I have been donating to my local homeless shelter. We started a homeless drive last November to get much needed items for the shelter around Christmas, and people still donated to myself so I thought a trip was needed!! There were warm clothes and lots of sanitary needs to help out the shelter, and I am very proud to say we will be repeating the homeless shelter drive again!

(my lovely Thank you Card)

As well as donating, I have also been very active on my social media! Since I was ill at bank holiday (and always working shock!) I did a different challenge to the ones that Catwalk set up (well done everyone by the way, amazing work!). I answered questions from my pageant page, celebrating curvy pageant girls, talking about appearance's and about the importance of mental health, especially as Suicide prevention day was around the corner.

(Collecting bras for a good cause!!!)
Also pageant girls inspire me every day, Miss Galaxy England posted about a great charity called Smalls for All, a charity which donates underwear to needing parts in Africa who are in desperate need of underclothing. Since I live in sports bras because of my job and I have a passion of hatred for bras (be free!!) I emptied my draw and sent off a lovely package!! if you would like to donate, search for them on facebook, online or send to the address in the photo!!

I have a couple more appearances lined up before the final, as well as finishing my appearance folder with those special touches. I've got tons of raffle prizes and also thinking of what I can do for the Ms girls on pageant day! For now, I have to close down the gym (extra workout with the weights people leave behind!)

Much love

Wiltshire beauty Queens are back in Force!

(Mrs Wiltshire Galaxy and Ms Catwalk Perfect Wiltshire

Back in 2012 was the summer of pageants, I had met Georgia for the first time after getting in touch through Facebook about her upcoming pageant, Miss galaxy. Having represented Swindon in this pageant before, I remember making a big list of stuff you can do and contacts, then suggested meeting up at the Swindon Pride parade. Never would I have thought that I would of become her best friend, being her maid of honour at her wedding and meeting someone who could be my sister, but less annoying! That summer, alongside Ruth and Ela, the Wiltshire beauty queens (hashtag and symbol)was born! We did so much together the four of us, through hiking (Ruth HATED that), to opening shops, helping out at various charity events and holding our own. We have our own whatsapp group and talk about everything under the sun.

(Kaspas!)

Fast forward to 2016 and Georgia is finally a married woman and can compete in the Mrs section, whilst I'm hoping to compete for the Welsh miss and pageant overdrive is happening again!!! And boy am I excited! We started off with The Swindonian launch night at Kaspas' new party room. There was milkshakes and puddings, all great treats and I love Kaspas' so much anyway as it's the dream pudding place!! It was great to catch up with Georgia as well!!

(The New WWBs)

Fast forward to Monday and it was the Beni Bear Prom night! I am a Patron for a charity local to Swindon called the beni Bear Club who help Autistic children and parents. It was their prom night where they got to ride in a vw camper van, dance and have their photo taken in the photo booth like true prom style! I was joined by Georgia and Jade, both wearing my dresses!! It was great to see all the children interacting and enjoying themselves, dressed up all smart and having the time of their lives! I love being a part of this charity and it's nights like these that keep me going on this pageant journey! I also got to spend it with some amazing friends!

(With the main man Beni bear!)

Being a part of pageants is not just about winning a crown and wearing a sparkly gown, its about charity, friendship and making a difference in someone's life. If I can just inspire one person in their lives, I am truly happy and it fills me with joy to be someone's role model! I have the bestest pageant friends that are right here in Wiltshire and can't wait to support their own pageant journeys! the next month we have Armed Forces Day, as well as the Miss universe GB finals which myself, Georgia, Ruth, jade and Emily will all finally meet up together to enjoy a night off and watch our fav sport, pageantry!!!

Lots of Love

Wednesday 8 June 2016

Time flys when you're stacking up the air miles!

(FOTG Internationals- Rehearsals)

It has been too long since I've written a blog entry about myself! Lately I have been writing about different pageant topics for the amazing pageant magazine Miss Natural Sparkle (so far about the curvy pageant girls, thrifty pageant girls and of course other pageant related materials). I've had the best pageant year I could of had this year and I am about to share all those sparkly details with you!

(Girlies backstage at the FOTG Finals in Paris)

First of all, I competed in the Face of the Globe International finals for the second time in my lifetime and let me tell you, it was AMAZING! Exhausting but amazing! I'm very happy to tell you I placed 7th overall, when my name was called for Top Ten I literally could not believe it! I screamed even louder when my Wiltshire Beauty Queen Ruth was called next!!! (She finished 2nd and will be back next year as Face of the Year, and she will kick pageant butt!!). Overall I raised £1230 for the Rainbow Child Foundation, I came 7th in Charity, 7th in Publicity, joint 8th in photogenic, joint 9th in congeniality so pretty much my best placing yet!!!! I met some amazing girls also, Bianca and Celene my pageant wolf pack as well as reuniting with Fiona and Alice my South West sisters, and of course my Paris buddies Stephanie and Natasha who gave me endless laughs around Disneyland and on the coach home. that's so ratchet!! I also got a chance to talk to and enjoy some great conversation with Steven Roddy from Pageant Planet and Kyle who is an amazing pageant coach! My Face of the Globe journey may have ended after three years but I am so proud to have represented my country twice in Paris!

(Miss Inspirational Finals- Miss Curves)

Straight from the coach journey back from Paris, me and Celene hit the road to Wales where she would be giving away her crown and I would be trying to gain one at the Miss Inspiration finals! it was such a long day and no sleep meant I wasn't at my A game but I am happy that I walked away with the Miss Curves inspiration award!! This brings me to The Pageant Planet. They posted a video of the FOTG final rehearsals where I was front of the stage, and the comments from all over the world about me just made my day! No negative comments but all positive about my size (as I am very different to most girls), some praised my "juicy booty", as well as call me an inspiration for them to compete as if I can do it, so can they! I am proof that curvy girls can compete and take those titles!! Once again after two years my Inspiration journey has ended with no title or placing but I have met my pageant bestie Celene through this, as well as get the Curves title!

(miss sparkling beauty finals )

Then fast forward a month and we have our very own Wiltshire beauty Queen Jade, organising her own pageant for the Rainbow Child Foundation! It was called Miss Sparkling Beauty and there were different age ranges, I was in the Ms section as I am too old for Miss! There was even a contestant from the Bus Pass Beauty Queens tv show (mega excited!) competing against me! I got to wear my Disney dress again as well as fly the Wiltshire flag in my high low! So out the awards I won:

Best Hair
Best Strut
Miss Charity
Miss Creative
Miss Publicity
Best Smile

And of course the overall title of Ms Sparkling Beauty UK 2016!! It was a great event and raised over £600 for the Rainbow Child Foundation, and I wish Jade the best of luck for the Face of the Globe Nationals in August!!

(Catwalk perfect finalists)

Now even more exciting news!! After Paris I entered a sponsorship content since I had no pageants in the pipeline and had withdrawal symptoms (a week in heels and a crown can do that to you!!) and I was picked as the winner to compete in the first Catwalk Perfect finals this September in the Ms division! I get to represent Wiltshire all over again!! So I have been very busy with my sash out and about! One appearance which sticks out to me was helping out at the BFF glitz pageant where as there was a shortage of adult contestants, I ended up borrowing a size 6 dress and squeezing my big butt into it! I also had to think of an outfit of choice so I went on stage with sunglasses and the outfit I arrived in, to "Sexy and I know it" by LMFAO. needless to say, I was the comedy section of the pageant! But I came away with queen and a big fluffy unicorn!!!!

(Swindon Adver)

I also was interviewed by our local papers who done an amazing story about the positive aspects of the pageant industry! I appeared with my little trainees who I gave been training to compete (and they did AMAZING at the glitz pageant). It's great that finally people are learning about the different types of pageants and all the charity and community work that goes into it!!

Well I am studying pageant books like crazy for a new piece for the Miss natural Sparkle magazine, have charity events coming up supporting my patron charity, have a weekend off for the first time in a long time and I'm now blonde!

Thank you for reading and see you on the flip side!!

 Love Hannah

Keeping it in the family

I often refer to my pageant friends as my “sash sisters”, we are part of a global pageant family and although we don’t share the same blood, we share the same passion for competing and making a difference in our lives and others. All that changed when my little niece followed in my footsteps to compete in a local pageant, where she walked away with the crown and like the proud pageant auntie I had inspired my little niece to take the big leap into a world of sparkles and worldwide friends. I interviewed a few pageant competitors who had kept the pageantry in the family, from mothers and daughters, to sons and grandparents! Here are their stories:
Keziah and Rachel Excell
For the regulars on the pageant scene, you cannot miss Rachel and Kez when they walk into a pageant for rehearsal! They instantly brighten up the room, their laughs are infectious and they genuinely enjoy competing together!  Keziah was the first to compete out of the mother/daughter duo to build up her confidence after being bullied and wanting to be a model. After her first pageant she felt very nervous and underprepared, and eventually asked her mother if she could compete with her and the rest is history!

“After a few kez still had lots of nerves and she asked if I would do the next with her, which I did and she was so much more relaxed and it was such fun and it brought us closer together. If I had to pick one pageant memory that stood out amongst the rest it had to be a teenie one we did. I wasn't entered but somehow I got roped into doing it. Kez also brought extra dresses. But then outfit of choice came along and all I had was the outfit I came in which was a white shorts playsuit, I used that along with keziahs black boots and a white fluffy head piece which looked strange but hey it’s all about the fun, I hadn't chosen a song for me to walk to, I left it to the directors to do and I'm known for being a joker so I get up to "I like big Butts" So me being me decide it's a good idea to spend the 90 seconds twerking around the stage, it went down so well that one of the judges and the compère jumped on the stage and joined me, Keziahs face was a picture of both horrified and omg that's my mum I love her look”.

Rachel also entered her disabled son to enter pageants, “it was one of the most important days of my life, my son who is now almost 20 has never once stepped on a stage, he has been at special needs school almost all his life and still goes there and he refused to do any plays as he couldn't cope with everyone watching him, so for him to even enter the building was amazing in itself but even though he only lasted about 30 seconds he did it”. They have raised so much money and met so many different people on the pageant journey, and they won’t be stopping anytime soon! This pageant duo will be rocking the Miss Galaxy finals next year, with Rachel entering the Ms and Keziah competing again for Scotland.

Laura and Erin White
Erin followed in her mother’s footsteps after recently seeing an article about a mother and daughter competing, and Laura telling her about her glitzy pageant past. Laura, a past finalist for Miss United Kingdom back in 1989 as well as Mrs England 1992, was thrilled that Erin would be passed down the sparkling tiara and carry on the pageant tradition in the family. “Erin’s dad who was my boyfriend back when we married in 1992 when I was competing, so he gets to go through it all again with his daughter this time! It’s very different and harder work than when I was competing. There was no involvement in fundraising or making appearances before a contest, which were just called beauty Contests then! We all had permed frizzy hair, our bathing suits were hitched up far too high and we all wore too much blue eyeliner, spray tans hadn’t been invented then!”
Erin entered pageants for confidence which was also why Laura competed in the 80’s, “I’ve seen Erin grow from a pretty but gawky teen into a beautiful young woman who has self-confidence and a belief in doing the right thing. I think it’s better now pageant wise because the girls are much more involved with the organization and work really hard before the pageant. It teaches the girls that hard work, commitment and dedication which are essential life skills for their future”.  Erin has competed in both Miss Junior Teen GB and Miss teen Galaxy Wales, coming second runner up in the 2016 competition as well as grabbing the Miss Congeniality title which to celebrate Erin bough the DVD and it now their favorite film (it really is the best pageant DVD out there!). “Last year Erin raised nearly £1000 for Together for Short Lives and is hoping to top that this year, she’s a finalist again in Miss Junior Great Britain again and think’s it’s important to remain loyal to one pageant organizer so she can give 100 per cent”. Laura is everything a pageant mum should be, helping her fundraise, taking her to various events and sharing the pageant journey which has made their bond closer as mother and daughter. Good luck for the finals Erin!

Laura and Katie Simpson
Up north in Scotland we have the dynamic due of Laura and Katie, who entered pageants first of all as a progression from dancing as Katie is a freestyle dancer who regularly competes in dance competitions. “I’ve always been behind the scenes as Katie has done 5 pageants, eventually I got roped into it but I have to say it was a lot of fun! Winning the sexiest contestant was like what! I had a chuckle! I won my first pageant of Ms Inverness and Katie came runner up in the junior division, she also places second in Little Miss British Empire in 2015.  Doing this experience has given us a strong relationship, we do so much together and are always on the road with her dance competitions so this is something we can do together!”. Katie added, “I was really excited for my mum, I knew she would go out and smash it. Mama is my biggest supporter in everything I do and I love her to bits”.  From competing in pageants Katie has signed up to two modeling agencies, as well as having her pageant mama showing everyone where she got her sass from!

 Natasha and Linda Wilson
It wasn’t until Natasha entered her first pageant that she found out that her grandma was a former Miss England herself! Lyn won the title back in 1978 back when the swimwear was the crowning attire. Natasha entered a Miss England heat in Devon and came top 12, as well as competing in Miss Earth England which she hopes to do again this year! “My best pageant moment was at miss earth England, and learning more things about being able to spread my eco message and to inspire other girls who were frightened when they were at the finals. My nan is a great supporter and thinks it’s great that even though I am in the army I can be myself and compete”.

There are many more Mother/Daughter combos, like Kristy and Daisy Fletcher who have both graced the Galaxy International stages and Kristy recently winning the Mrs World UK title (congrats) as well as the dynamic duo of Misha and Kasha Grimes who have flown to South Africa and Vegas to compete Internationally. A pageant journey shared is a pageant journey worth completing! Stay sparkling!

What makes a true appearance? By Hannah Golding- Miss Sparkling Beauty Wiltshire 2016

When it comes to pageants, making appearances is one of the most important part of your title role. I remember when I first started competing in pageants all those years ago (no spring chicken now) and someone somewhere said you can either hang your sash on the wall and let it gather dust or wear it out until the sides fray and the crown is crocked. There is nothing worse than a beauty queen being crowned then keeping the sash as decoration for her home whilst the runner ups and other contestants are still making appearances for that pageant.

Having your sash means getting the word out there about that particular pageant, of course it also helps towards your final scores. If you were an overall winner of the pageant, the directors want to see their winner be proactive, inspiring more girls to enter next year after seeing how well the current winner has been. It also makes people aware of that pageant system, as many girls will only know about the “big” pageants, and not about the upcoming pageants unless they stalk every Facebook post!
There is nothing better than if you put all that hard work in, to be awarded the Miss Publicity sash, but that gets the question going. What is a real appearance? Is it any photo with your sash as technically that is promotion? Is it tagging that pageant in a Facebook post or sharing everything onto Facebook? Is it attending events in your sash, charity events or just promotion? And of course, does taking your sash to a nightclub or supermarket really count? Here are the big tips of the do’s and don’ts of pageant appearances:
  1. The appearance needs to mean something
It’s all good grabbing your sash out at any opportunity and instagramming it with a million hashtags but how does that photo relate to your journey as a pageant contestant? For example, going to a beauty salon. If you are a savvy pageant queen, you could have talked to the salon beforehand and asked for a promotion for promotion, getting discount in return for promotion their services? Or even hair/beauty sponsors? This would be accepted as an appearance as you are doing promotional work for that company and it is benefiting your journey as a pageant queen. Taking your sash on a holiday? This is where there is a fine line, if you are raising awareness for the pageant and going to a local event in that holiday then yes, but if you are on a girls holiday and want a few snaps of you in a bikini with your sash for a publicity album then does that really benefit the system? Did you do anything for the pageant apart from catch a tan and get a good selfie? Personally I think although the photo can look great, it shouldn’t count as an appearance.

  1. Press
That battle with the press to get the correct title, or to explain that there are more than just one pageant and one pageant queen in the town! “Do you want World Peace?” Getting in the press is a great way of making an appearance, from online magazines to the local newspaper, even national if you are lucky!! Although the press will most always likely get the wrong title, this is the perfect pageant appearance, whether it be talking about the finals or any charity work that you have done! Pageant directors will always include a press release template but always make it personal to you, and make sure you have the photographer’s permission if they don’t send a photographer themselves!!

  1. Charity work
This is the best kind of appearance and the reason I got into pageants, to make a difference! Charities will feel extra special that they have a local celebrity and also it raises awareness for their charity as well as your pageant title! This is also where your appearances can get creative! From paint runs, absails, gunge tanks and horse riding, to the usual charity runs, bake sales and fun days. No matter how small, these are the best kind of appearances and what being a pageant queen is all about! Most pageants have their chosen charity which is great to fundraise for, but don’t limit yourself by only raising funds for that charity if there are local charities that ask for help as not only does it count as an appearance, but it also helps raise awareness in your area!

  1. Double sashing
Now some pageant girls will find a pageant system and stick to it, which is amazing for both as you can find a system which suits your personality and shine through! I am most known for my work with Face of the Globe yet the press will always remember me as a former Miss Swindon (Miss England) as that was my first major title and I made a million appearances! However, there is only so much you can give, and also other pageants to try! With new pageants cropping up daily, it’s nice to see who has represented where and to give newcomers your opinions about what pageant suits best. If you are lucky enough, you might be lucky to be a finalist in two pageants at one time! This is where it can get a bit tricky. There is such a long build up to finals that dedicating yourself to one pageant alone might seem to some a waste when there are finals sooner than the one you want. You need to ask yourself, which title would I like to represent the most? Most pageants do not have a problem with multiple titles unless of course you are a regional or national winner at their finals then there will be a conflict of interest. But I digress back to appearances, should you wear two sashes from different systems at one time? Or take one picture of a sash at an appearance and then another picture exactly the same with a different sash? When asked about pageant bugs, double sashing comes up top! It’s great that you have two different titles, but having two sashes at the same time can be disrespectful to your pageant system. This also goes for wearing a different crown with your sash, some crowns are very recognisable with their sash so to mix and match can leave people confused. My advice? If that appearance has asked for your specific title then you should bring that sash and crown, yet if it is an event you have organised then you have every right to show off your achievements but when it comes to making that publicity album double sashing just looks wrong.

  1. Appearance
You represent your title, and you should look the part. Of course sometimes life get’s in the way and sometimes it is unavoidable, for example I’ve been asked to attend an event yet finished work 10 minutes before so naturally I have to attend in trainers and workout leggings (I’m a personal trainer). Luckily the event was a casual event, but imagine if I turned up in my workout gear to a black tie ball where I was the special guest!!!  Dress for the occasion, if it’s a charity event, see if you can wear the charity’s top! If it a sporting event then workout gear is perfect, but dress for the weather as crop tops are not practical! If it is an evening event then a pageant gown would stand out but for the right reasons. This also goes for wearing your crown and sash, your crown is very delicate and maybe a 10k obstacle course would not be the right place for that twinkly tiara! Making sure your sash is nice and clean, not crumpled and presentable hair/make up makes sure that for one your photos will turn out amazing but also that you are giving the best representation for yourself as well as the pageant brand.

  1. Social media
Does Facebook really count as an appearance? For a society where everything is social media based, there are pros and cons about social media with pageants. Your personal Facebook is an indication about what sort of person you portray yourself, so if you are competing in a pageant be aware what you upload! However, this is where pageant like pages come into play! I have a Facebook page purely dedicated to my pageant antics, from promotion of pageants, charities, to sharing my journey with all my “fans”. I also have a personal Facebook in which I mostly share funny dog pictures. I would not include my personal page in my publicity album, however my pageant page I would as I share everything pageant related. Does every share I make and every status update on this pageant count as an appearance? And what if I share all these updates onto the pageants page and groups? I think the answer should be no, the page in itself is an appearance but I could share anything from what I had for dinner and that shouldn’t count towards my final scores. The same goes for Instagram and Twitter. Putting on my sash, taking pictures in my room, uploading and then tagging and sharing does not make an appearance unless for example it’s a Facebook awareness campaign (like the anti bullying week, etc) or blogs which is a great way of getting across to others about the pageant system and what you are doing to raise awareness.

  1. A Directors opinion
“An appearance to me, is when the finalist shows they have been to, or held an event and put some hard work and effort into whatever it is they're doing. Be it promoting, fundraising - or both! I like to see appearances that have three or four photos, of the finalist actively working or promoting their system at the event. So it's not just a "quick, pop your sash on and take a photo, we'll make it an appearance" I love to see publicity folders that have had time and effort put into them too, I've seen some really stunning ones”
Katherine Harris of Miss Catwalk Perfect UK, with the grand finals in September

Pageant's best curvy queens- by Hannah Golding

Beyonce once sung, "I don't think you're ready for this jelly..." but the pageant world is finally ready for the "Bootylicious" girls that Destiny's Child championed. It's no secret that society's version of a beauty queen is a slim, trim, long haired beauty with impeccable speech and posture. She is virtuous and kind, the traditions set back in the 1960's where beauty queens were to be unmarried and without children. Fast forward to 2016 and now any woman can compete for that crown, whether they are skinny, curvy, married, have children, tattoos, pint sized and even, shock horror, divorced! There are so many pageants that have become more accepting, rather than asking for a certain size and height. It's a new era of pageant queens, the ones who truly love their bodies and don't let a number change what they can and can not do! Here are just a few curvy pageant girls who rocked the runway this year....

Sarah Pritchard- Mrs Galaxy 2016

One of the biggest pageants in the UK today, which sees thousands of girls from all of the UK travel up north for a four day weekend consisting of sparkles, crowns and as many high low swishing as you can shake your fist at! The winner's then go onto America to compete internationally which us Brit's always do well. Welcome Mrs Pritchard onto the stage, who at a size 14/16 blew the competition out of the waters to be crowned Mrs Galaxy and dare I say the first size 14 UK winner for Galaxy?! I asked for a few words from our inspirational new winner!

"The reason I wanted to do a pageant was because for the last 4 years I have watched my daughter compete and always thought , if I was younger I would of been brilliant at that. I watched the Mrs Galaxy and always thought how glamorous and slim the contestants are and if I was slimmer I would compete, so I entered with the thought of me losing half my body weight in 6 months. In the meantime I noticed my teenage daughter losing weight and commenting how "FAT" she was, she is a size 6 . I realised that me constantly going on about my weight and trying to diet wasn't giving my girls the right message .So I have tried to be happier with my own curvy body . I will be honest being a curvier contestant filled me with dread. I was very worried about what I would look like on stage , especially in the swimwear round ,Madly enough I found my swimwear round was probably the best round I did. I went into the competition never thinking I would win . I wanted just for my Husband whom I love incredibly to think wow that's my wife ,and my kids to be proud."

When they called my name , I honestly didn't believe it , I thought it was a Miss Universe moment and there had been a mistake ! I was that shocked I burst out my dress by taking the biggest gasp !!
They day after I had a few negative comments, about how the fat girl had won the pageant which made me think am I really that different and unworthy of the crown? But that soon disappeared with all the messages off woman I didn't even know, telling me how happy they was that I had won ,that I was an inspiration and for what ever reason Galaxy Pageants had broken into the world of curvy which was fantastic! I must admit I am thinking internationals in Aug , should I lose weight? Should I grow my hair? Should I start bathing in milk every day? Then I look at my husband who returns my glance, I look at the way he looks at me, like I am the most sexiest, beautiful woman in the world and I think of all the other beautiful mummies I know that aren't size 8, that pop their Spanx on on a night out, and live life to full ... I think I am one of you. I will wear my crown with pride!"

Abi Hill- Plus Size model and past Miss England Grand Finalist

I first met Abi back in 2011 for our first time competing at the Miss Galaxy England finals, back when I had only been in pageantry a few months! Abi stood out a mile, not for her size, but for her amazing walk and model ability. You could see she was a natural, which led her winning the Simply be model search, and gracing magazine, editorial and catwalks around the UK. I asked Abi how she felt being a "curvy" pageant girl, and some of the struggles we face!

"I have been competing 6 years now and when I first started out, I was one of only a handful of 'plus' contestants. Now, there's so many more girls getting the confidence to enter and it makes me really proud to be part of that change! I don't feel like people see me any differently, as I try to make sure my actions - like charity work and appearances - speak for me, not my dress size. Sourcing dresses has got a lot easier in recent years, as more companies see the need for particular sizes and styles that flatter, but I am used to struggling because i'm also just shy of 6ft tall so everything is short! I tend to stick to known brands such as Jovani, but I am looking at getting a custom gown next year - it is my last eligible year in the Miss England system so I want to give 100%. I wouldn't swap my pageant experiences for the world - it truly has changed my life! I've seen places and done things I never could have imagined, as well as making friends for life"

Rebecca Argent- Miss British Beauty Curve 2015

Rebecca won Miss British Beauty Curve last year, a pageant which celebrates curves, embraces them and puts a whole show dedicated to them!

"It’s 100 per cent the best thing I’ve ever done, I’ve had loads of opportunities to do modelling work, done photo shoots and I’ve started a blog. It’s a great platform to get the word out that you don’t have to be a size six to love your body. There’s nothing more beautiful than a confident woman. There’s some stigma that plus-size modelling is all about obese people, fat girls, but it’s not, It’s about people’s body types, it’s the way they were born – with some women having bigger hips and so on. I've been competing for 3 years in "regular" pageants and went for curve last year! Best decision ever!"

Jade Dando- FOTG Regional finalist 2016 and multiple Publicity award winner!

I've competed with and attended several appearances with this pint sized beauty queen, and she is just as sassy on stage as she is in real life. Jade is only 19 but has already competed in several UK finals, which can be daunting for her age and for her size in a age where body image is drilled into you from a young age more so now than before. I asked Jade about her experiences in the pageant world being that little bit curvier than her fellow contestants.

"Pageants have helped me improve my confidence and embrace my curves, they have taught me that I don't have to be a certain size to wear a tiara and a pretty dress. Society has become more accepting but then some people still have negative views, but it's so reassuring knowing that I've had so much success being curvy!"

Of course I can't finish this without a couple of other curvy girls making waves in the pageant industry, one lovely girl being Megan Goldberger who raises the bar when it comes to fundraising, winning the Miss Charity award at both Miss Teen Galaxy Wales and also Face of the Globe Wales, taking a Top Five place. She oozes confidence and is the most genuine pageant girl around, ask any girl on the pageant scene! As well as Megan, we also have Vanessa Morgan, who took the Miss Curves Inspiration title at the South West heats last year, as well as Rio Woolford, one of the first Miss British Curve winners who still continues to fundraise and inspire long after she hung up her crown.

(My Daily Mirror shot)

Last but not least I will include myself into the mix. Competing for 6 years, I've competed at a size 8 and now at a size 14. Being a personal trainer, I get alot of negative comments about my size, yet I know I have the VO2 Max of an athlete and can stack the leg press comfortably for 15 reps. The reason I became a personal trainer was to install confidence in my clients, that they were fit and health, comfortable in their own skin. We are not all built to be a size 6, some of us are naturally that way and there is nothing wrong with that, the same goes for a size 16 girl who may be a little curvy and store a little bit more than usual around the midriff area, but works out every day and wakes up with a smile! I have been lucky to represent England twice internationally for Face of the Globe, as well as be an ambassador for Style Xl, and most importantly be a rolemodel for younger generations.

So love the skin you are in girls, rock that runway regardless of what jiggles, if you want to eat that delicious cheesecake even though pageant season is round the corner, do it! Don't ever feel guilty for being who you are, remember a smile is the prettiest thing you can wear!
